Employee Spotlight: Joe Manko

Joey Manko

Joe, a Lead Installer, has been a valued member of the Boston Retail Solutions team since January 2007 – almost 18 years! He started at the company as an installer coming in with a solid mechanical background. He quickly adapted to his role, showcasing his skills and eagerness to learn.

Joe has been one of the few to see our company evolve over this many years – you can imagine the variety of projects he’s worked on and thousands of barricades he’s built. Though he’s traveled all over the country for us, he’s been primarily stationed in Delaware; that’s until five years ago where he met his fiancée and made a move up to New Hampshire.

A typical day for Joe as a Lead Installer involves leading and managing our nightly installs. "I'm responsible for ensuring our jobs are Done Right The First Time," he shares. This includes communicating the nightly plan to the team, constant problem solving, and delegating/assigning different duties to the team. He often helps us train our new installers, whether at his service center or others. He finds joy in training others and called it out as one of his favorite tasks of being a Lead Installer!

Outside of work, Joe unplugs through playing video games and spending quality time with his fiancée. The couple is excitedly planning their wedding for December 2027.

Among the many experiences at BRS, Joe shared one of his favorites was the fast-paced challenge of the Brickell Property project in Miami which was a mall and hotel space. “Our team managed to tackle ~4,000 feet of barricade in 2.5 weeks”, he shared.

When asking Joe about a unique part of working at BRS, he shared “ I have a lot of freedom in my role, which means my manager trusts me. No one is looking over my shoulder, they know I’ll reach out if I need anything”. He went on about the atmosphere fostered by his manager, paired with great benefits that give him the life he wants to live.

Joe’s manager Matt, refers to Joe asthe perfect example of a highly dedicated Lead Installer and employee owner”. Matt goes on to explain “He’s friendly, hardworking and never complains. He’s dedicated to the success of a project regardless of how long it takes him." Joe agrees that the shifts can be long, but there is no way around it – all we can do is work together and try to be as efficient as possible while still doing the right thing.

Being a team member for so long, Joe is not only known internally – but externally! His Regional Manager, Bob, shared that mall management all over the Delaware territory called Joe by name while complimenting his work.

Lastly, when asking Joe what people should know about his job and advice he’d give to new installers, he shared the following points:

  • You must communicate with your manager, be open and honest - especially with concerns.
  • Flexibility is essential to this company’s success – the company will take care of you, but you have to be open to the constant changes.
  • Make good relationships with your co-workers, it makes the long car rides much more enjoyable!
  • Problem solve, problem solve problem solve – develop that skill early on.
  • Travel when you can! Joe has been to 32 states going out on jobs with BRS – he has seen a lot of the country!

As he looks to the future, Joe is excited about the continued growth of BRS. Particularly continued development of process, procedures and consistencies within our system to help us operate more efficiently every day.

Thank you, Joe, for your dedication and hard work! You have undoubtedly helped shape this company over the past 18 years, and we’re looking forward to many more!
